    Development of Thyme-Infused Polydimethylsiloxane Composites for Enhanced Antibacterial Wound Dressings

    Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is widely used in biomedical applications due to its biocompatibility and flexibility but faces challenges due to its hydrophobicity and limited mechanical strength. This study explores the incorporation of thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.) into PDMS to enhance its properties for wound dressing applications. PDMS composites containing 2.5 wt.% and 5 wt.% of thyme were prepared and evaluated for physical, chemical, mechanical, and biological properties. Scanning electron microscopy, contact angle measurements, absorption tests, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, hardness, tensile testing, antibacterial activity, and cell viability assays were conducted. Thyme integration improved mechanical properties with increased absorption and preserved hydrophobicity. FTIR and DSC analyses indicated minimally altered crystallinity and chemical interactions. Hardness decreased with higher thyme content due to terpene-induced polymerization inhibition. Tensile testing showed reduced stress at break but increased elongation, suitable for wound dressings. Enhanced antibacterial activity was observed, with composites meeting bacteriostatic standards. Cell viability exceeded 70%, with optimal results at 2.5 wt.% thyme, attributed to cytokine-inducing compounds. Thyme-incorporated PDMS composites exhibit improved antibacterial and mechanical properties, demonstrating the potential for advanced wound dressings.

    Sage-modified polydimethylsiloxane applied as antibacterial wound dressing material

    Materials based on polydimethylsiloxane have been developed with antibacterial activity and mechanical properties required for wound treatment. Sage herb (raw, modified, and polyphenol extract) was used as a filler in an amount of 5 and 10% by weight. Physicochemical, mechanical, and biological properties were examined. The results indicate a beneficial effect of sage modification on the tested properties.

    The Effect of Farming Systems and Cultivars on the Qualitative and Quantitative Composition of Bioactive Compounds in Winter Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

    Triticum aestivum L. subsp. spelta (cv. Rokosz) and common winter wheat Triticum aestivum L. subsp. aestivum (cv. Arktis, Belissa, Estivus, Fidelius, Hondia, Jantarka, KWS Ozon, Linus, Markiza, Ostka Strzelecka, Pokusa) grown in an organic farming system were analyzed and compared. Furthermore, the productivity of four common wheat cultivars (cv. Fidelius, Hondia, Jantarka, KWS Ozon) grown under four different (organic, conventional, integrated, and monoculture) farming systems was compared. Using UPLC-DAD-MS, UPLC-PDA-MS/MS, and TLC-DPPH•, nine phenolic acids, nine alkylresorcinols, and their antiradical activity were identified and quantified. In the organic farming system, the highest yield was observed for T. aestivum L. subsp. aestivum cv. Fidelius (4.17 t/ha). Infections of wheat cultivars were low or at a medium level. The highest resistance to Fusarium fungi was shown by cv. Fidelius, which also exhibited the highest alkylresorcinol content and antioxidant capacity. The total phenolic acid content was highest in cv. Rokosz (1302.3 µg/g), followed by common winter wheat cultivars cv. Linus (1135.1 µg/g) and cv. Markiza (1089.6 µg/g). The potential of winter wheat cultivars for human health and their suitability for cultivation in different production systems was determined, showing significant differences in bioactive compounds depending on cultivars, systems, and years.
